Mr. Paul Pope

These drawings are quite old at this point but I figure they're appropriate considering the news I got today!

Artist extraordinaire Paul Pope is running a three week residency in Florida this coming October. I applied in May and found out this afternoon that I was accepted. Well at least kind of...

Apparently, I've been selected as an "alternate associate resident" which essentially means that I've been put on the wait-list. If someone who was accepted drops out or can't participate, I get to take their place.

The possibility that I might get to study under Mr. Pope is really exciting. Even if things don't work out, it was a nice boost to find out that I might actually have some skill hahah.

While 100% is probably my favorite work of his, I have a serious soft spot for his Batman work and I made numerous efforts to copy drawings from Batman Year 100. I also did an original drawing heavily indebted to his interpretation that I've included also.

Deco Lady

I have a thing for art deco, fashion illustration and pretty girls.

Combine all three you say?

Sure.

A Drawing of Barbara

This is the wonderful Ms. Barbara Paz.

Working with wash can prove tricky especially when the paper can't hand a lot of water.

This turned out fairly well though, the lips being probably the biggest mistake in the drawing.

This is of the wonderful Miranda Rensch, web-designer, musician, bacon aficionado, and good friend.

The First six SEQUENTIAL pages from Life in Marvelous Times!!!

Welp...

Here it is, the fruits of my labor from the last week!

These will be getting color and some small tweak over the course of the week (like this little thing called a "title" on page 1) but otherwise, this is pretty much rock and roll!

Let me know what you think if you have the chance. Do you like it? Would you keep reading? Is the square root of Pi cubed really equal to the first three notes of the half-diminished scale!?!

A tribute to B:TAS

As people may or may not know, I'm mildly obsessed with Batman: The Animated Series.

Mildly is of course the understatement of the century but we keep it moving...

The above piece is my attempt to replicate the feel, mood, and style of the show. The color was most definitely influenced by the wonderful Lee Loughridge's palette from his tenure on the equally amazing first 13 issues of Batman: Gotham Adventures (which you should buy here because they are the best super-hero comics ever created in the humble blogger's opinion).

Run on sentences and hyperbole aside, I'm fairly pleased with this piece.

More "Marvelous"

At this rate, I'm going to run out of what I believe to be clever (albeit grammatically incorrect in this case) titles very soon.

No good!

What is good though is that I wrote, pencilled, and inked six pages this week, something that has never occurred in my life. The last of the six is above. The first six pages in correct order will be posted tomorrow evening so stay tuned!

A Drawing of Jeff

This is Mr. Jeff Klingel. I didn't quite get the eyes right I don't think, but the rest I'm fairly happy with.

A Drawing of Billy

After a whole bunch of girl drawings, I figured it would be good to maybe throw in one of my guy friends for a change.

This is Mr. Billy Wyler. He'll one day be world-renowned and making lots of money as a musician. Remember the name.

Yet another "Marvelous" page

Here's the second page from LiMT. Tomorrow we meet LeBron, and he's doing some things that are not so nice...

A Drawing of Dolly

This is a drawing of Dolly Vu!

This is one of the earliest drawings from my stint of drawing pretty girls. It's also one of my favorites.

More "Marvelous" Pages

Two more pages inked... this time with the ACTUAL lettering on the board to boot! The city page is actually the first page of the comic (though it's missing the title which I still need to add) and the second takes place about seven or so pages afterwards.

I'm quite happy to finally find myself moving on pages as opposed to taking the old 8-20 hours per page. The splash took a little longer than I would have liked but it's the first page and it's three-point perspective so I figure it's all right.

A Drawing of Amy

This is the wonderful Amy Breitag. I had a lot of fun on her shirt or whatever it is... lots of little scribbles with a .005 pen that someone actually mistook for drybrush!

Dogs!!!

Here are two of my friends pets. The pug is Gunther, not sure exactly what Rudy is...

Life in Marvelous Times

Here are some pages from my "epic" (not really) that I've been working on recently.

The story follows six very different people sharing a living space who are all trying to find love and happiness in their lives. It's a comedy/drama with a little action thrown in from time to time and it will probably occupy all of my drawing time for the forseeable future.

This particular sequence occurs towards the middle and serves as a way to flesh out the relationships between three of the main characters, Henry, Milton, and LeBron (FROM THE CHURCH!!!)

The lettering is place holder right now, (digital lettering can burn in hell and then go get it's hairline pushed back 6 inches by Kid Dynamite era Mike Tyson) and the pages will eventually be colored (probably with spot coloring).

A Drawing of Lottie

This is a drawing of the lovely Lottie Anderson.

A Drawing of Sarah

This is a drawing of the wonderful Sarah Ditty, fashion blogger extraordinaire. Sarah's blog Launderette: Cleaning up Dirty Fashion is "devoted to the socially ethical and environmentally sustainable future of fashion and beauty." I'd highly recommend it, the link can be found below.
